"The band started as a five piece , including brass, back in the mid 1960s. The founder members were: Liam Deakin, Richard Carlin, Hugo Carlin, Eddie Sweeney and Charlie Doherty. They decided to form a full time Showband, firstly playing local venues, then further afield. The line up of the band in 1967 was: Peter (Boy) Roddy (Vocals), Hugo Carlin (Bass), Richard Kelly (Drums), Raymond Beales (Lead Guitar), Eddie Sweeney (Tenor Sax & Bandleader), Johnny Murray (TenorSax), Donal Sweeney (Organ) and Mickey Doherty (Keyboards/Trombone/Vocals). Under the management of Eddie Davis, the band was to be found entertaining dancers in halls and marquees all over Ireland in places like the TV Club Dublin, Gleneagles Hotel, Killarney, Seapoint Ballroom, Galway, in the Irish Halls in England and in Strathpeffer in Scotland where they played a much publicised Hogmanay Gig".

Owing to taking such a big band from London admission this Friday will be 9/6.
Next week the Symbols (from London) who were number 3 in the British chart with “Best part of breaking up”.
This claim of number 3 is a little exaggerated since all archives show that its highest entry was number 25. However, claiming it was near the top of the charts was more likely to attract a bigger audience.
May 15/16 From London The Symbols along with support band. No picture
Owing to taking such a big band from London admission this Friday will be 9/6.
The Symbols recorded 'Bye Bye Baby', a version of the Four Seasons song, which spent three weeks in the UK charts in August 1967, reaching number 44. (The song reappeared in the UK when the Bay City Rollers reached number 1 with it in March 1975, two years after their Pavilion performance). The Symbols followed it with '(The best part of) Breaking Up', which was originally recorded by The Ronettes. This was their second and final UK chart success and reached number 25 in early 1968, spending twelve weeks in the charts.
Next week The Which What who were in the Dutch Top 20 and various other charts throughout the world with their first record “Gimme gimme good loving”; their second record “In the year 2525” has led them to numerous TV appearances in Japan and throughout the continent.
May 22/23 The Which What along with support band.

May 29/30 Castor’s Crowd plus support band 8/6 and 6/-
One of the best known soul groups from the Midlands who have played in major venues in England including the Cavern, Whisky a GoGo in the heart of London’s West End, playing the best of authentic soul music.
The following is a post made in 2002 by John Ball who played with Castor's Crowd.
"My name is John Ball. I was born in Leek in 1949, and lived in the town at Beatty Road. I attended St Luke's Junior School and the Mount School for Boys, (where our form master was Windsor Davies of 'It ain't half hot Mum' fame). On leaving school, I worked for Victor Robinson and Sons as a Painter and Decorator. I then became a member of local band Castor's Crowd with John (Spud) Lovatt (now sadly missed). We played at many of the local dances in Leek and the surrounding area. Does anyone remember these days?
I left Leek around 1974 and now live in Wirral. I would love to hear from any old friends".

Their biggest years were in the mid 70s and they are best remembered for their hit singles 'Tiger feet', the UK's best-selling single of 1974, and their Christmas number 1 'Lonely this Christmas. In all the band had fourteen UK Top 20 hits between 1973 and 1976, including three number ones.

On the Sunday we were playing a gig in the Dingwall Territorial Hall, Ferry Road, for the troops who were on a training weekend and since Mud were not travelling South until the Monday they came along to our gig as our support band.
They were great and you could tell they were destined to go far. I bumped into Les at a 70s weekend at Butlin's Camp in Ayr in the 90s and looking back now we had a laugh about it. He remembered it very well."
